Reasons to stay in
On June 23 we will be given the opportunity to cast our vote as to whether to remain in, or to leave the EU.
The Green Party wants the UK to remain a part of the EU because we believe that member states can work better together. We believe that we need international rules to control big business and finance, and to protect consumers, workers, the rights of all citizens and the environment.
The EU has also already given us the freedom to live anywhere across member states, whether that be for work, study or retirement. We also need to work together with our neighbours to tackle climate change and reduce pollution. Beaches are now cleaner, air is now cleaner, much of this is thanks to the EU.
The journey we have come so far is one that should be celebrated. Individual countries have come together to work for the common good. Each member state with their own language, history and culture has chosen to share sovereignty while keeping their own traditions in place.
Being a member of the EU also helps us meet international challenges: the refugee crisis, terrorism and climate change. We do however want the EU to be more open and democratic and to be accountable to the citizens of Europe. But to make the EU better for everyone, we need to stay part of it and reform it. We can only do that by voting to stay in.
